Saturday

Its Saturday, we still follow the same schedule at the orphanage. As you can see from the photos, Sofia has a cold. Today she only smiled that one time in front of the music room. They are watching her closely. The caretakers gave her medicine this morning. They check her temperature every hour or so. (The highest was 100 degrees.) And she got a bottle of tea with sugar to drink all day. She slept more than usual. I know she's in good hands. Tomorrow we won't go in, maybe she will sleep all day and be better on Monday.

Our afternoon break was very eventful. First, we went to the park behind our hotel. There is a monument there which has a table inside. If you put your hands in the hand print on the table, "The wedding March" blasts on loud speakers. So Saturday afternoon the place is crowded with wedding couples. It is a tradition here in Karaganda to drive around town and take pictures at all the important statues and monuments after the wedding ceremony. We were there to see the happy couples. Notice the beautifully dressed people. First, the bride and groom go into the monument to put their hands on the hand prints and make the music play. Then they go and dance on the platform below. There is an accordian player playing Kazakh music while all the guest form a circle and dance around them. There was even a man releasing white pigeons. It was wonderful to see.

At 1:30, Elaine and Warren invited us to join them for lunch at a Uigher (Weeger) Restaurant. The Uigher are a clan of Chinese who are living in Kazakhstan. Their food is delicious. Its not like the Chinese food we know. It actually tasted more like a Slavic dish that I grew up eating (Yuvich). Many vegetables and much meat in a paprika sauce served with either rice or noodles. MMMMMM good!

Now I'm sitting in the hall as I do every night (its better reception for wifi) but tonight there is a wedding downstairs and there is a quartet playing typical wedding reception music....Spanish Eyes, Michelle, Sunrise Sunset,etc... So I am enjoying the live music while I write.

Have a great Saturday everybody.

  1. Hi Tina, Questions: Does she get any dairy in her diet? Why tea? Who supports the "O" financially? Would it be possible to send donations to them? Bring some pot stickers home, they look wonderful.
